Washington DC, United States: In a move that has captured the attention of the nation, former President Donald Trump recently registered for the New Hampshire presidential primary, marking a significant move in American political history. He became the first person to has served as president to file such paperwork in person more than once, according to reports by AP.
Eight years ago, Trump, after registering for the 2016 contest personally on the first day of the filing period, sent Vice President Mike Pence to submit his paperwork for the 2020 contest, in line with the tradition of incumbents delegating this task. However, his recent return to personally file for the 2024 New Hampshire presidential primary was something new.
While signing the commemorative poster that is signed by candidates, he wrote, “Vote for Trump and solve your problems.”
According to various reports, the security surrounding his visit was something new as only supporters – who were selected by the campaign, were allowed to gather in the hallway to the secretary of state’s office at the Statehouse. In addition to this, access to the rest of the building by any commoner was strictly prohibited.
The deadline for the official sign-up is October 27, 2023, and the candidate has to file their nomination before or on the last date. It is anticipated that this year, dozens of leaders will come forward to do so.
The process is easy as to file candidacy; the candidate must meet all the eligibility criteria to become a president. Followed by filling up a one-page form and paying a US$1,000 filing fee.
Previous filings
Earlier, during the 2020 elections, around 33 Democrats and 17 Republicans signed up.
The all-time high signed-ups were registered in the year 1992, when 61 people got on the ballot.
Trump’s candidacy in 2016, 2020
It is to be highlighted that Trump bagged both the Republican primaries, in 2016 and 2020, in New Hampshire but lost to the state in both the general elections.
In addition to this, in the year 2015, during some national polls, Trump gained second position and lost to retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson. That day, he bragged about his money because they needed a special kind of check. He said the bank wasn’t as rich as him.
On Monday, he talked about how many people support him in the New Hampshire election and mentioned that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis isn’t as popular as before.
Democrats to Trump
Donald Trump faced criticism during a news conference on Monday in New Hampshire by calling him untrustworthy.
US Senate Maggie Hassan, a Democrat, mentioned, “At a time when our country confronts significant problems at home and around the world, and when our global leadership is as indispensable as ever, we need to be united. But Trump is incapable of bringing us together,” according to AP.
“We are the Live Free or Die State: We have no use for a man who would overturn our elections or praise dictators. I know that as Granite Staters and Americans, we will reject Trump and we will win next November,” she added, reports claimed.
